Wonderworld U.S.A

To many Americans and Foreign visitors alike the attraction of theme parks lie within the latest thrill rides, abstract facilities where animated characters come to life or fantasized projection of perfect American lifestyle where happiness exists one very corner. It is, however, not the fascination that lured me to wander through these places.

Having spent a significant portion of my teenage years living in Southern California visiting theme parks was always a routine part of my life. Whether it’s a summer school trip or a relative visiting the state, an experience at Disneyland or Universal Studio was always high on the agenda. For me constant trip to these parks was always startled by artificial landscapes, massive crowds, life-size cartoon characters and well calculated precision rides which fulfill the satisfaction of masses seeking predictable joy or excitement. Gradually I became weary even when someone brings a proposal visit to theme parks.

For a subject such as theme parks which is so deeply entrench in the American culture it would be difficult to avoid criticism on the phenomenon that has played a vital role as part of America’s cultural identity for more than 50 years. Admittedly, with my past experience my first intension was lean towards criticism. But as much as my resentment to theme parks to many people it is still a paradise where children and adults alike are truly mingled together as one. May it be the latest thrill ride or walking along the sidewalk which projects the ideal American township patrons are all indulged in a vividly animated yet purposely alienated environment. Gradually, my resentment transformed into a fascination as the journey progressed.

Although my excitement remains only in photographs.
